D.C. Everest Open Source Software Initiative

This site contains links to a compilation of high-quality Open Source software for Windows. It is intended as an introduction to the rich world of Open Source software available to D.C. Everest students, parents, staff, and the rest of the world.

Much of the software is already being used in our district to help save money. Open Office is being used by staff and students at Mountain Bay, Easton and Hatley elementary schools. Audacity is being used by students in the senior high theater and production lab for announcements and for class assignments involving recorded audio. Open Office is also installed on all district computers and by using Open Office we are ensuring that students can obtain the same software at home that they use at school without burdening their family with the need to buy costly software. It also allows compatibility with different versions of word processing and spreadsheet software that students and staff may use at home.

Feel free to use the programs on multiple computers and forward the link to your friends.

If you have a slow internet connection, CDs containing some popular open source software are available for 25 cents (to cover the cost of the CD) in your school’s IMC. This CD contains software from OpenDisc.
