Literacy Connection

Getting Started With Books:

Read books for free by visiting the public library regularly with your family. Set a family reading time.

Check garage sales, library sales, school book fairs, and second-hand shops for bargains on books.

Hold a book swap with friends or neighbors.

Check the internet for bargain or used books. Half.com found at: http://half.ebay.com/index.jsp is one such site.

Keep each of your children’s books in a special place.

Decorate a cardboard box or an orange crate with their name, “Ben’s Books” for example.

Teach your children to handle books gently. If a book becomes damaged, say “Let’s try to fix it. Next time I’m sure you’ll be more careful.” Praise your child whenever he/she handles their book well, puts it away, etc.
