Health Services are a cooperative venture shared between parents, school and the Marathon County Health Department. The school district employs a registered nurse to supervise our health program. A health aide services each elementary school at least four hours a day for the school year. The health aide, under the direction of the district nurse, is responsible for assisting in maintaining school health records, administering first aid, dispensing medication, coordinating vision and hearing screening, implementing communicable disease control measures, attending ill students, providing pertinent health information to students, and making referrals to the district nurse. The district nurse may be involved in various health problems in general. The district nurse will address student’s specific problems; however, this should not be thought of as a substitute for a physician’s visit. Elementary children in selected grades are screened annually for vision and hearing by the Marathon County Health Department. Other students are screened by the district nurse upon referral. If a child is suspected of having a communicable disease, a statement from the attending physician is needed prior to returning to school. ILLNESS AND INJURY If a child becomes ill or injured at school, parents will be notified by phone. If parents are unavailable, the emergency contact person(s) listed on the enrollment form will be called. A child will not leave school unless contact has been made with an adult. If a child’s condition warrants emergency treatment, the parent will be contacted and the child will be sent to the emergency room at the hospital. MEDICATIONS If your child needs to take ANY MEDICATION at school, please follow the medication policy as indicated:
4) The student needs o report to the health office area to take their medication. 5) Students may not carry any medication with them at school except an inhaler with special permission. All medication must be kept in the office or a designated, secure area. 6) Over the counter medication must be in the original container or a single dose packet properly labeled by the manufacturer. These medications must be kept in the health office area. 7) Designated school staff or the health aide may administer over the counter medications after written consent is obtained from the parents. This includes Tylenol, Advil, cough drops, throat drops and cold medications. INHALER USE AT SCHOOL Students may carry their inhaler(s) with them in school with the parent’s and physician’s consent. Students should be able to demonstrate safe administration of the inhaler and be aware of the symptoms that indicate they need the inhaler. Instruct your son/daughter to notify an adult if relief is not obtained within 15-20 minutes after they use the inhaler. If you want your child to carry his/her own inhaler with them during the school day, lease complete, sign and return the Asthma Plan form and the Parent/Physician Medication Consent form. Both forms are available in the school office. |
