Around 10 years ago the person setting up user accounts on the D.C.E. network made a mistake. At that time the buildings were not networked together like they are now.

When the server at the Sr. High and the server at the Jr. High were set up, each was treated as if it were the only server in the world. That would have been fine if the schools remained perpetually isolated from each other. In today's networked world though it isn't ideal.

Right now an overhead view of network accounts looks something like this:

All buildings are together as part of the same district except the Jr. High and Sr. High. They appear to be districts (organizations) by themselves.

We've left things this way ever since because the only inconveniences it caused were to the Technology Team staff. Fixing the way things were set up would potentially cause quite a bit of trouble for everyone at the Sr. High and the Jr. High.

As time passed, however, the technologies used on our servers and printers has improved. The tools available to manage large lists of users (over 6,000) have become more capable. And finally, the layout has continued to become more of a problem.

It has finally reached a point where we need to change the user directory tree. If we don't it will prevent new services from working correctly and disrupt our ability to continue improving the network as our district expands.

After Monday and Tuesday (7/9 and 7/10) an overview of our network directory tree will look more like this:

All schools will be listed together. While there will be significant "hidden" changes there should be very few visible side affects from the move. One thing that may affect some users, however, is a change to your login name.

Currently user accounts at the Sr. High are in the form:

Username.SRHIGH

and accounts at the Jr. High school are in the form:

Username.jrhigh

This will change when the network directory is updated for your building. After the change, Sr. High accounts will be Username.SrHigh.DCE and accounts at the Jr. High will be Username.JrHigh.DCE.

This does not affect many people. If you don't already have to log in by typing the ".SRHIGH" or ".jrhigh" after your login ID, then you will continue logging in the same way you always did. There are only a few special cases where the entire login name must be entered.
