What time does school start and end?
The tardy bell rings each morning at 8:45 AM. Students should be in their rooms at that time. Our school day ends at 3:35 PM.
May my child ride the bus to a friend's house? May my child invite others to ride his bus to our house?
No. Students may only ride on their assigned bus and cannot ride to other students' homes via a different bus. This rule is intended to guard against buses unintentionally having an overload of students.
How do I get hold of the bus company?
Call First Student Bus Company at 359-3555.
Do students riding the bus have assigned seats?
They are supposed to have assigned seats. Some drivers are quicker than others in getting their bus organized in the fall.
Does the "school choice law" permit me to pick the school within the Everest district that I want my child to attend?
No. The school choice law established procedures by which students living in one school district can attend school in a different district if the receiving district has space available. This law did not change our district's procedures for assigning students to schools.
If I move within the Everest district, will my child have to change elementary schools?
Most of the time, yes. But, exceptions are sometimes made. Exceptions can only be approved by the Assistant Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Lois Alt. Requests should be made in writing at: D.C. Everest Area School District, 6300 Alderson Street, Schofield, Wisconsin, 54476.
What's the best way for me to determine if the house or apartment I am considering moving to is in the Weston School attendance area?
Call the First Student bus company. They have the best maps and the most up-to-date information. Their information is much more reliable than the advice of real estate agents or neighbors who live near the property that you are considering.
If I'm picking my child up at school for an appointment, what should I do?
Send a note ahead of time so your child's teacher can plan ahead. Then, when it's time for your child to leave school, come into the office and sign your child out. Do not go to your child's classroom. Teachers will not release a child to an adult at their door. For security reasons, all children should be picked up in the office only.
When do Weston School students first have access to computers?
Every classroom in the building has at least one computer in it. The teachers at any grade level can take their classes to the school's computer lab. In our school district all grade 4 students are taught keyboarding skills. All Grade 5 students learn simple word processing.
What kinds of computers do students use?
Almost all of our computers are PC's (as opposed to Apple products).
What do you use fund raising profits for?
Each fall our school holds a school wide fund raiser. In a good year, with a little luck, we earn about $10,000. In recent years the major expenditures made from these profits have been for the purchase of computers, the sponsorship of field trips at every grade level, special assemblies at school and unique teaching equipment for classrooms (ie laptop computers, electronic keyboards, musical instruments, physical education equipment, etc.). In addition, the PTO
designates a percentage of the profits to support special projects within individual classrooms.
Do students have outdoor recess all year long?
That's the plan. However, on days when the actual temperature or wind chill would pose a threat to student safety, we will have indoor recess. On marginal days, students may go outside, but have their recess shortened in response to the severity of the weather. With this in mind, students and parents are encouraged to plan ahead and bring to school articles of clothing appropriate for the weather. Students may only stay indoors if they bring a
note from a physician justifying the request for indoor recess.
On days that school is dismissed early due to inclement weather can you call me at work to let me know?
We can't do that. With over 400 students enrolled it just isn't possible. On days with severe weather coming, parents are advised to monitor their radios and listen for bulletins announcing the early release of students. Please don't call school to inquire. If you're listening to your radio, you will know the decision about the same time as we do. Be aware that our school closing bulletins will refer to the D. C. Everest Area School district. Bulletins that refer to
"Wausau Area Schools" refer to the Wausau district and not us. |
